News just in: We have been recognised as a Library of Congress Literacy Awards Best Practice Honoree for 2020! The Library of Congress is the world’s largest library, offering access to the creative records of the United States.
The Literacy Awards, originated by David M. Rubenstein in 2013, honour organisations doing exemplary, innovative and replicable work.
The award comes in the week when South Africa is celebrating its National Book Week and the world observes International Literacy Day.
Book Dash, one of 15 organizations honoured by the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Programme for their implementation of best practices in literacy promotion, is the only African organisation to receive this recognition this year. All organisations on the Best Practice Honorees list receive prize money of 5,000 USD.
The Book Dash team is really excited by this recognition. It is affirming to know that the work we do, publishing open licensed children's books and distributing hundreds of thousands of physical copies freely to children, is considered by the awards panel to represent best practice, internationally. The award encourages us to do even more, and we'll find a good use for the prize money, either to print more books, or to do more research into how our books make a difference.
To date, Book Dash has published 140 different titles, and is on track to distribute its millionth copy by the end of 2020.
